Actual places. Workshops, centres, embassies, so that taking part does not require already being online and already able.

The places where the network touches ground.

Local context, physical and social, for collaboration, support, research, education, health, work and representation. Three things are meant by it, and they are not the same. Support stations, which are volunteer groups. Centres, where work, study, research and support happen in one place. And embassies, which are points of connection and adoption. All are organised as projects, like everything else.

It starts with an activity, not with a building. The first experiment is meant to be a local or remote activity with clear responsibilities. A physical centre is only considered after there is evidence of demand and of something that can sustain itself. Anyone reading this as a plan to open buildings has it backwards.

The problem it addresses

An organization with nowhere to be reaches only the people who were already online and already able. Physical presence is what makes participation possible for everyone else.

How it works today. Distributed organizations reach the connected and the already-equipped, and call that openness.

What would change. Places are proposed and run like any other project, and they carry part of the ecosystem materially.

Why the rest depends on it. Without somewhere to be, an organization for everyone reaches whoever already had a laptop and time.

Where this stands

Drayker has internal material on stations, support centres and embassies that is not published yet. Nothing public states what a station commits to, how one is proposed, or how it relates to the support layer of the network.

The internal material describes possibilities, not a network of operating locations. There is no inventory of properties, no staff, no budget, no licences and no confirmed pilot. This is long-term work rather than something waiting on a decision.

Nothing described here is implemented. This repository exists so that the first document about it has somewhere to live and someone can argue with it in public.

How it fits the whole

Where the ecosystem exists physically — the places where a network of people who may never meet in person finally meets.

Stations are a model on the projects platform, organised like any other project. They are part of the distributed support layer, and their resources are governed through DAF and funded by the value unit. They carry the physical side of the rest of the ecosystem: the Academy has spaces and laboratories there, open science has its clinics, and volunteers who study and collaborate can live and travel between them. An organization with nowhere to be reaches only the people who were already online — stations are how the network touches the ground.

First functions

These are concrete and unclaimed. Any of them can be opened as an issue and delivered by one person.

1. Design one pilot activity, local or remote: who coordinates it, what support it offers, how participation is measured, and when it ends. This is the first thing, and it needs no place at all.
2. Write what a station has to commit to.
3. Write what evidence of demand and sustainability would have to look like before a physical centre is considered.
4. Map a station onto the distributed support layer.

How to contribute

Read CONTRIBUTING.md and GOVERNANCE.md in the organization. In short: open or find an issue, say in the thread that you are taking it, branch as fn/<issue-number>-<short-name>, and open a pull request against master. There is no separate review branch.

Participation is voluntary and implies no compensation, employment or future claim.
